Fiery is 9 months!
I’ve been surprised how much she enjoys it when we read to her. I was reading “Where the Wild Things Are” to her yesterday and she actually was laughing at some of the parts. She can be totally cranky and soon as you say “do you want to read a book?” she perks up and looks over at the book shelf. She knows what “no” means. She will deliberately make noise to show me when she’s about to bite a cord, shake her potty (and yes, it does happen, and yes, pee goes every where… yuck). And then she teases me, grabbing the cord, I say “no..” she drops it, grabs it again, I say “no Fiery..” and then she drops it. I find it hard not to chuckle at her innocent evil. What’s ultra adorable is at some points she decides to leave the room and when I say, “Fiery, where you going?” and start to go collect her, she starts B-lining it as fast as she can go screaming “ahhhhhh!” Elimination communication is getting easier and easier. Fiery holds it in longer, goes quicker when she’s placed on the potty, and pees less. I think we’ll be experimenting with a toilet seat reducer as that way I won’t have to dump out the contents of her potty into the toilet :-). As far as eating goes Fiery has been eating more (and really enjoying it!) Here’s an example of her ingenuity with vanilla yogurt:
My baby (and I can still call her that) is 9 months old! She’s officially been outside of the womb longer than she’s been in. She is developing SO much more personality with so many more preferences. If I’m holding her on my hip I would usually hold her leg with the opposite hand but Fiery immediately pushes my hand away. She likes to be held a certain way.

EC Update
The biggest news is that Fiery has now been holding it in for 1+ hours. This is wonderful compared to 20 minutes and I’ve been catching more :-)
Unfortunately she’s pooping 1-2 times a day at unknowable times, so I’m happy if I catch one of them. What’s ultra cute is that she rocks on the potty when she’s about to poop.
I always clap and go “yay!” when we catch a pee or poo and she immediately starts clapping and going “yay!” but with a face that says she has NO idea why she’s doing it.
My goal right now is to get one no-miss day.

EC Progress
So here’s a small update on our potty training with Fiery (who will be 7 months tomorrow)!
Last night was our FIRST completely dry night! I put a fresh diaper on her at 10 and she was nursed down by 11 PM. At 6 o’clock I checked her diaper and it was still dry! I was so excited I tried putting her on the potty (she wasn’t too happy but didn’t protest). She went a tiny-bit and then we went back to bed. She awoke at 9 AM, still dry, and when I put her on the potty she peed a ton! I hope this happens again :-)
Yesterday she scooted herself toward her potty and starting hitting it. I took this as a cue and put her on at which point she peed! I still don’t know if it was on purpose or not but it’s still VERY encouraging!
On Saturday morning she was in her high chair and she was getting all fussy. I looked and I noticed she was trying to take off her diaper (had half of it off already). I was like, why would you do that? And I looked and she had pooped big time and probably did not enjoy sitting in it :-) Go Fiery!
She has also started a routine where she is pooping in the morning. I cannot tell you how happy I am about this.

This just became a whole lot easier!
Having a naked baby makes this ECing thing so much easier. She wakes up, I put on her on the potty to go pee, she goes pee, I strip her down (now that I know she won’t have to go for a bit). I then let her hang out on her rug naked with some of her toys and when I “feel” like she might have to go again I place her on her potty, sound her cue, and she goes! And she’s placed back on her rug (or in a high chair, depending on how hungry I am at that point). Soon she gets nursed down for a nap and pees when she wakes up!
Or, like yesterday, she’s lying on the ground and I hear her make a fart that normally is a fart before she has to poop so I quickly scoop her up and plop her on her potty and she immediately goes poop! I’m so proud of her!
Don’t get me wrong: we have plenty of misses and times where she has to be in a diaper (if we’re out) and plenty of laziness on my part but not having to undress her AND take off a diaper makes me so much more willing.
I use the word “feel” because I’ve realized a lot of this is based on intuition. A lot of times I’ll have the thought “she might go poop right now” and then common sense kicks in and says there’s no way I could know that, so I let her be and miss a poop :-( It’s amazing how the mother-baby bond works!
On a side note she’s gotten over her fear of peeing while Tim’s in the room and even peed for him when he put her on the potty Saturday morning (first time for Daddy!).

Bad EC Day
Yesterday was fantastic. I caught almost all of her pees and I didn’t have to change her diaper until 4 or 5 PM… after that Tim gets home and well, I get kinda lazy :-) We still only went through 3 diapers- yay!
She didn’t poop all day so I really want to make sure I catch a possible poop because I know it’s going to be big. I just wish she would poop already! I keep hovering around her listening for her cues, waiting, waiting, waiting.
She woke up at 10:30 AM- which is later for her so that’s probably what contributed to a 5 minute nap after a 45 minute struggle, followed by a 25 minute nap hours later- after a 30 minute struggle- and now that it’s 5 o’clock she is finally asleep- no struggle.
So I think this has thrown off her eliminating schedule as I have spent a lot of time watching her amuse herself with her feet on her potty. That or she thinks it’s fun to roll herself off (which is kind of cute).
And since I hate being frustrated with my daughter, because it’s not her fault she doesn’t understand here’s a list of really cute things that she does that makes me smile:
- She MUST sleep with her top arm (if she’s on her side) on top of the covers.
- When she’s super tired in bed she’ll make her legs straight and do a wheel barrow and ram her head into the pillow. It looks funny.
- Has started to scream “ba, ba,” “da, da,” and “ma, ma” when she’s tired.
- She thinks it’s the funniest thing when I sing (and it probably is).
- Just being her.

EC Revelation
Fiery will not pee if Tim’s in the room. She always pees after she wakes up from a nap within a few minutes of being placed on her potty. Tim was in the room and I sat with her for 5-10 minutes waiting for her to pee and got nothing. She was just hanging out, smiling at her daddy, hanging out, smiling at her daddy. Within 30 seconds of Tim leaving the room she started to go! Oh, well. At least we figured out what (or who) the problem was :-)

Fiery’s Potty Came in the Mail!
Here is a picture of Fiery in her new Baby Bjorn Little Potty.
She christened it as soon as I put her on it and I was very proud! What I love about this potty is that Fiery can’t sit up on her own for more than few seconds (she’s getting there though!) and the contour of the potty holds Fiery up so I have a hand to sign “pee” to her when she goes. She is also sporting her new hand-made baby leg warmers that I just finished a few days ago. (I’m on Ravelry under Yiskah- find me!) I’m pretty happy with them (they might need some elastic around the thigh but no biggie).
And, yes, that a collection of Animorphs in the background and I’m cool because I own it. <Fiery will definitely be reading them.>

Elimination Communication
Now that I feel like I have somewhat of a handle on having an infant, I’d like to be challenged again, and so on Monday I have started to “potty-train” Fiery, who is now about 5.5 months old. I thought this would be a fun thing to blog about.
I don’t want to get into the specifics and “how-to’s” but if you’re interested you can read about it here.
I jumped head-first into this and came up with this:
A very poor method. One thing about doing this is quickness: and unbottoning footsies is by far not a quick method. Since then I’ve learned, thanks to a Mothering forum, that pants and a ti-shirt is much easier. Being butt naked would be the easiest (yay for hardwood floors!) but unfortunately I don’t know want to do that until the weather is a little bit warmer.
We had our first poop today!! I was SO proud of her. I thought she was just going to pee and then she just started pooping! I didn’t even have to “catch” it. Go Fiery!
And this is a picture of her first pee:
Just to add this potty-training toilet is horrible for infants and I can’t wait until my Baby Bjorn Little Potty comes in the mail :-DMy Flickr page.
