NIM on Trash.
From April 08, 2008 @ 12:48 pm
I’ve been reading Colin Beaven’s blog, No Impact Man, for a little while now and have been thoroughly impressed with his insight into the challenges of going green in our world. He maintains an unflinching conviction throughout that green is the responsible, human thing to be doing, which is awesome.
I just wanted to point anyone reading this over to his new series, LV GRN, about little steps we can all take today to impact our environment in a positive way, but even more than that to begin to live responsibly within the bounds which our planet can support. This installment is about reducing the amount of trash we produce (did you know that the average in America per-person is 4.5 pounds a day!?) by saving it for a week and examining it to discover what sort of trash we’re producing and whether or not we really want to be producing it. To me, it’s sort of like a fail-safe log of your life because you never forget to throw something out.
Anyway, I commend Colin to your reading most heartily. Hopefully you are all as impacted by his thoughts as I am beginning to be.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | UK set for 15% renewables target
The European Union is expected to tell the UK that 15% of energy needs must be met from renewable sources by 2020.
Someone explain to me why we can’t do this here?

“I saw the future,” he said. “This could solve some of our problems.” Reduce traffic congestion in Center City, encourage healthier lifestyles, improve the air quality, save people money and time.
Very Cool.

Panel: Increase gas tax to fix roadways – CNN.com
From January 15, 2008 @ 9:06 am
I’m all for this raise in the gas tax. Anything that will make the cost of transportation via gas powered vehicles too hard to bear in this country is a good thing. It will force our country to reassess how it faces life. If we can’t even afford to all drive our SUVs and Minivans and cars alone, how could we remain so ruggedly individualistic. The country needs this.
Well, maybe that’s extreme… Oh well :)

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Grass biofuels ‘cut CO2 by 94%’
From January 08, 2008 @ 1:02 pm
This article from the BBC documents a possible new source of biofuel. I was definitely against the use of corn based ethanol because corn is such a staple in the diets of so many third-world countries and would thus adversely affect their food supply. However, switchgrass? That’s not so bad. After all, who eats switchgrass?
However, you still run into the same problems of using fertile land to grow fuel instead of food in third world countries. As I was reading the article I had a bizarre picture pop up into my head of a time in the future when there will be no more natural land. Instead, every square acre will be tuned for the support of mankind. One acre for food production, another for fuel production, another for housing, another for “environmental support” (trees to eat CO2 and produce oygen, etc. etc.). Anyway, thought that was somewhat interesting.

Recycling in its purest form — among the worms – CNN.com
Ok, this sounds awesome. What a great way to bury yourself. I wonder if, like everything else eco-friendly, this will cost a whole lot more. I’m sure it will. :(

GOOD 008 – Transparency – Vampire Energy
When I get around to it, I’m going to post a calculation of how much “vampire” energy is being used in the Biddle household. I wonder how much we could be saving…
